Why Los Blancos Possess 'Complete Trust' in Teenager Pitarch

Thiago Pitarch in action
The teenager has featured in seven games for the Spanish giants, featuring five starts.

When an teenage makes Real Madrid history in a key European tie against Manchester City, it inevitably draws acclaim and attention.

During his first start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time European champions claimed a three-nil round of 16 first-leg advantage at the Bernabeu.

The young player, who also made his Real debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then helped the Madrid side defeat the English Premier League side in Tuesday's return to secure a last eight berth.

Aged 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder was the team's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing star Vinicius Jr's previous mark by 10 days.

A Meteoric Rise From La Fabrica

This talent is the latest to emerge from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most exciting young players.

He joined Madrid from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe youth teams, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a strong impression.

Pitarch progressed to the B team and it was in a friendly match in which they played against the academy's first team, then managed by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who took over from Xabi Alonso in the new year.

Reports would later label the moment as "an instant connection," adding he stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, character and determination he added to the side.

'His Best Attribute Is His Character'

During the summer of 2025, former boss Alonso invited Pitarch to practice with the first team and awarded him playing time in pre-season.

However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the turning point in his development as he came on as a second-half replacement in both ties against Benfica that set up the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I have dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the first day I began playing football, each day you go to train and every day you play a match," stated Pitarch following his first appearance.

"I've just achieved my dream with the greatest club in the planet and in the top tournament."

Given a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he spent several seasons after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the following four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos created an opening.

Pitarch has taken it with performances that have defied his age and inexperience.

"He is a extremely fast footballer, and you can see his capabilities," remarked Arbeloa. "He's extremely dynamic, with excellent stamina, work-rate and mobility."

Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his manager.

"His greatest quality is his personality," continued he. "He constantly demands the possession, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.

"I understand fans might be surprised to see him start in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had total trust in him to perform his normal game.

"Thiago will continue to get opportunities with the first team. It is delightful to coach a player like him."

A Future International Decision

Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and grew up deeply involved in the local game, moving through youth setups before entering Real Madrid's renowned youth academy.

He possesses dual Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, giving him the option to represent both nations at senior international level.

Under international regulations, footballers may represent different countries at youth level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only binding once they appear in a official senior international match.

Pitarch has played for the Spanish national team at youth level, representing both the under-19 and U20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja made it to the last eight.

Despite this, he has not yet decided to any senior national team, who are watching his rise with interest.

In a recent interview, the player said: "I have not taken my ultimate choice so far. Things are great with Spain, but I'll make a conclusion in the near future."

This scenario mirrors that of other bi-national players such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Lamine opted for La Roja, Brahim opted to play for Morocco.

Focus on the Future

For now, his attention is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and repaying Arbeloa's faith.

He played 74 minutes in the 2-1 victory at the Etihad, which sealed a 5-1 overall triumph and a last-eight tie with the German champions.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Angel underscored the coach's confidence in younger players to help the club pursue trophies to come.

Following his impressive impact so far on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is expected to be a central figure in that.

"Arbeloa treats me the same. We deal with it very normally. I attempt not to overanalyze it too much - I must earn my minutes on the pitch," he commented following the win at Etihad Stadium.
