The Showrunner Discloses He Has an Idea of How Pluribus Will End... At the Moment.
Vince Gilligan never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would turn into a breakout success. “The viewers have been incredible,” Gilligan says. “I did not foresee the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
As the debut season of the hit program reaching its finale—and a second season already in development—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the audience reaction and whether it will shape the narrative path of Pluribus.
Regarding the Tremendous Viewer Reception
Anyone might to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and online debates surrounding Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to ignore the noise.
“The experience is akin to force fed hot fudge sundaes and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I get wind of it from others, and that's on purpose. Never in my life Googled myself, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a bottomless pit I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”
Regardless of his concerted efforts, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to accept it graciously and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“It is not our goal to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not impacted by audience chatter.”
“We prefer to keep our focus on the work,” he chimes in.
The Big Question: Will the creator Know the Finale of Pluribus?
Considering Gilligan and his team are not listening by audience theories, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? Essentially yes… sort of.
“We've developed some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a good idea for a better idea. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we conceive of something superior and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Then again, if plans fall through, director and writer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to use as a backup.
“I constantly suggest that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” Smith quips, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Then again, why not reference the iconic TV endings?
“My dream is Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
