The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Chose the Incorrect Critical Role Track
This latest animated series, the newest animated series from Critical Role, revealed an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues fighting hard and making their mark, while also hinting at multiple agonizing personal histories for characters such as the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, the character Fjord.
Overall, the intro looks stunning. However, I felt that something was missing in the song choice.
The intro employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar song created by artist Colm McGuinness. It's a track from the official score of that title, the second one put out by the production company's record label their music brand. It's a great nostalgic option, and I believe that fans of the sequel series will love its presence.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's opening doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that accompanied the show's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it improved further when cast member Sam Riegel added lyrics to the tune for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Including singing from one actress, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as the writer, the song was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. It's a song that excites you before you start an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the right notes in my opinion. It's a grand composition, but based on my understanding of this party, I can't help but feel that its tone is a little off.
Naturally, the creators has already said that the animated show will have some changes and variations from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its intro appears as one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. For those eager until then, or wish to prepare to get to know the personas of the second series, the original episodes are available on the audio platform and the video site.
