The Details Known Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Shooting

At least 16 individuals lost their lives and over 40 sustained injuries when attackers fired on a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities have labeled a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, officials have announced the death toll stands at 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were transported to hospital.

The victims are still awaiting officially identified, but investigators think their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She recounted the moments leading up to the attack, saying they were standing when the gunfire began. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, a senior official expressed that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.

An Israeli citizen was among those killed during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number are still under care, with five in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two officers who attended the scene.

He wrote, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
