Manchester United Set to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move from Bayern Munich.
A Major Acquisition for the WSL Side
The forward, with six months remaining on her contract, has been a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing will be seen as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League side.
Departure from Munich was expected since she appeared to be fighting back tears while thanking the German club’s supporters following a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its top strikers. Per reports, the formalities for the move have now been completed.
Consistent Goal Threat to Boost United's Forward Line
The experienced striker's arrival should represent a significant uplift to United’s forward line. Schüller has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- For seven straight seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford
The acquisition of the German international coincides with a period when the club appear to be gathering momentum.
Recent performances include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen further business:
- The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The new deal for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.
On the midfielder's new deal, a club official stated: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having joined from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much the club have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
