Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will be OK after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.

“That gives me comfort, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”

The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the hospital, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.

“Still unsure,” the coach said. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”

New York police issued surveillance images earlier this week of a man sought in the incident involving Boyd. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and authorities said it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt according to reports.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday about halfway between Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was transported to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn said Boyd has been on his mind “a great deal” since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a child.

“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd did not participate this season, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.

He signed with New York as a new signing in March and was anticipated to become an important component of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during a training camp practice on early August and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn said. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of Texas University in 2019. He joined Arizona in last year and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd inked a single-season agreement valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
