Israeli citizens commemorate two-year anniversary of October 7th attacks as Gaza ceasefire talks continue
Israelis have gathered throughout the country to remember the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated offensive on 7 October 2023, as discussions continued in Egypt over a conclusion to the hostilities in Gaza.
The attack saw more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken away to Gaza as hostages. It was the most most lethal day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.
Israel responded by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, as reported by the area's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as reliable by the United Nations and other world agencies.
"Our aggressive opponents have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on that day.
He also vowed to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the release of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will no longer present a threat to Israel".
Commemorative Events Across Israel
The Israeli government postponed formal memorials until October 16th - after the conclusion of the festive season - but events still occurred throughout the country on that day.
A commemorative event for the loved ones of people who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was held in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the victims' relatives, it was broadcast on Israeli broadcast stations.
Some time earlier, a silent tribute was respected throughout the country.
Ceasefire Talks in Egypt
Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' delegations convened in the North African Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a second day of mediated discussions to examine the conditions of the agreement.
A prominent Palestinian official knowledgeable about the talks revealed that an evening round of negotiations started at evening in Egypt.
The official explained the morning session ended without concrete outcomes, because of disagreements over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not recommence hostilities after the initial stage of the agreement.
He commented that the discussions are "challenging and have yet to deliver any major advancement," but mentioned that intermediaries are making efforts to narrow the gaps between the both parties.
Key Points in Discussions
- An enduring truce
- The swap of the hostages still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The pullout of troops from Gaza
- Arrangements for assistance deliveries
- Post-war governance of the region
Public Reaction
In Tel Aviv's public square earlier, young Hagar - whose family member lived through the assault on the outdoor event, where many attendees were killed and dozens more were captured by Hamas gunmen - told: "No location appears as home any longer and until all the hostages return no one will be secure."
"Once we see everyone home returned, we can feel relief anew. Then we can commence heal," she added.
In front of the leader's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people congregated to demonstrate their solidarity for the loved ones of the captives. Israel states 48 stay in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be alive.
Demonstrator one woman explained: "We need do every compromise necessary for the abducted to come back home. But we truly desire promises that we will be safe."
Surveys now consistently show that around 70% of Israelis desire the war to end in as payment for the freedom of the abducted.
Gaza Situation
At the site of the gathering, grieving people came together to remember the victims.
From that location, the boom of military attacks and artillery could be detected just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people indicated the intense Israeli shelling carried on.
In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were reported in the dawn of that day in the western district, area and zone areas and in the eastern district of Sheikh Radwan, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwestern area.
"Once the dusk comes, the dread arrives with it," evacuated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was killed by an Israeli air strike earlier, explained.
"Me and my three children are fearful of the attacks. All the night we are resting together, clinging, notably my little child who puts his head on me throughout the night."
"Constantly we look at the updates to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be completed and that the war will come back to us."
Humanitarian Emergency
The healthcare center in Gaza City announced it had received the remains of six people by the afternoon, including a trio killed in an Israeli attack in the southern district.
Nasser hospital in the southern city of that area indicated another two dead people had been delivered. An individual was lost his life by Israeli troops while looking for aid to the south, health workers said.
