Democratic lawmakers Denounce Trump After He States They Should Face Execution
Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced anger after Donald Trump charged a group of Democratic legislators of being "traitors" and stated they should be arrested and punished "with execution" following their posting of a controversial video.
The Recording That Sparked the Controversy
The recorded message, shared on earlier this week, includes six Democratic elected officials who formerly worked in military or intelligence roles.
"Similar to us, you all swore an oath to defend and defend this national charter," the lawmakers affirmed in the 90-second video. "And right now, the dangers to our constitution don't only come from abroad, but from right here at home. Our statutes are unambiguous, you can decline illegal orders, you can decline illegal orders, you should refuse illegal orders. No one has to carry out directives that break the statutes or our constitution."
Donald Trump's Incensed Response
The clip appeared to prompt a angry response from the former president.
On the following morning, Trump published on his preferred platform: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate publication, he wrote: "This constitutes really serious, and Harmful to our Nation. Their words cannot be enabled to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third message, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also reposted a declaration that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Representatives Answer
Following Trump's comments on Thursday, House Democratic leader issued a combined statement censuring the statements.
"Political violence has no place in America," they wrote. "Elected officials who appeared in the video all served our country with great patriotism and excellence. We strongly condemn Donald Trump's appalling and dangerous threats of violence against congressional representatives, and urge Republican lawmakers to strongly do the same."
The opposition officials also said that they had been in touch with security officials "to make certain the security of these representatives and their families."
"Donald Trump must right away delete these unhinged digital publications and retract his dangerous rhetoric before he gets someone killed," the announcement added.
Officials' Defiant Reaction
The lawmakers who were featured in the video also released a declaration.
"We are former service members and security experts who care for this country and took an oath to safeguard and support the constitution of the United States," they stated. "This commitment is permanent, and we aim to maintain it. No warning, intimidation, or incitement will deter us from that fundamental responsibility."
"The most revealing aspect is that the ex-president deems it liable to punishment by capital punishment for us to repeat the statutes," they stated. "Armed forces members should understand that we have their backs as they execute their vow to the founding principles and duty to follow only lawful orders. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our obligation."
They continued: "The entire nation must come together and denounce the ex-president's demands for our execution and ideological conflict. This is a time for ethical certainty."
Further Political Reactions
The Democratic Senate minority leader also condemned Trump's remarks and shared on digital platforms: "It's important to understand: the President of the United States is demanding the execution of elected officials."
He continued: "This is an clear THREAT. Each congressional member, every Representative, all citizens – regardless of party – should condemn this right away and absolutely."
The Conservative official supported Trump's allegation that the Democrats had engaged in "sedition", characterizing the video as "wildly inappropriate", commenting: "This represents very risky, you have leading members of Congress telling soldiers to disobey orders, I think that is unprecedented in US history."
The Republican leader also reportedly informed media outlets that in what he read of Trump's posts, Trump was "explaining the violation of sedition" but that "attorneys have to analyze the wording and determine all that."
Executive Branch Reaction
During a administration briefing on Thursday afternoon, when questioned by a journalist, "Does the president want to execute elected officials?", the White House press secretary responded: "Absolutely not."
"Let's be clear about what the ex-commander in chief is reacting to," the representative stated. "We see current representatives of the federal government who conspired to arrange a recorded statement to members of the national defense, to serving soldiers advising them to ignore the commander in chief's proper directives."
She stated: "The purity of our defense system rests on the hierarchy, and if that system is violated, it can lead to people getting killed, it can lead to disorder, and precisely what these members of Congress ... are essentially supporting."
