A Account of Surprising Kindness: When a Student Allowed Me to Stay on Her Dorm Ground
During the year 2006, My journey took me to Canberra for a medical school interview. I figured to arrange accommodation upon arrival, however when I arrived, a large conference was taking place and all the backpackers hostels and cheap hotels were completely sold out.
As a visitor from the city-state of Singapore, I considered maybe I could spend the night at the airport – only to discover that airport, not like the one back home, closes all night. Not knowing how to proceed and growing worried, I hopped on a city-bound bus and started wandering near the casino, reasoning I might spend those hours somewhere that stayed open through the night. Admittedly, this plan in the ideal condition for nailing an interview the following day, yet, as a cash-strapped student, luxury accommodation was impossible.
The world needs more people like that woman.
Apparently, I appeared out of place as a young woman noticed me walking aimlessly through the city and inquired if everything was alright. I recounted my predicament and right away she offered I was welcome to sleep on the ground at her university residence at the Australian National University – which was perfect, as that’s where my medical school interview was the following day. She went further by offering a meal: one sandwiches she brought back her part-time job. I was able to use the bathroom and a protected spot to rest for the evening.
Looking back, it’s clear to me the enormous leap of faith she undertook as a young woman inviting a guy she’d just met sleep on her floor. Back then I existed within a bubble of male privilege and did not consider to such safety concerns. Now, as a father, it astounds me she did that – but still very grateful.
I never did study at that university, and I didn’t meet her again, but her act remains etched in my mind that incredible gesture of generosity. I hope life has returned her good deed many times over. The world needs more people who show such kindness.
